For Pine View High School graduate Sayde Madrigal, an internship at Grass Creek Construction offered more than a glimpse into the construction industry. It provided a firsthand look at the people, planning, and teamwork that bring projects to life.
Sayde’s interest in construction started long before her internship. A recent graduate of Pine View High School and a state runner-up wrestler, Sayde spent three years in auto shop classes and attended construction camps, where she discovered a passion for building and began exploring construction as a career path.
This spring, she joined Grass Creek Construction as an intern with one goal in mind: learn as much as possible.
“I wanted to learn how every department works and see what really goes into a project,” Sayde said.
Throughout her internship, Sayde worked alongside team members in a variety of roles, gaining exposure to estimating, safety, project coordination, accounting, and field operations. She spent time on active jobsites with superintendents, observed project planning and problem-solving, and learned how different departments work together to keep projects moving forward.
One of the biggest surprises wasn’t the complexity of the work. It was the culture.
“What surprised me most was how welcoming everyone was and how much they wanted to teach me,” she said. “You really have to work as a team, both on and off the jobsite.”
Like many people outside the industry, Sayde initially viewed construction primarily through the work happening in the field. Her experience showed her a much broader picture.
“There’s a lot more planning, coordination, and communication needed to make projects run well than I realized before.”
Working alongside experienced professionals gave her an appreciation for the countless decisions, conversations, and behind-the-scenes efforts required to successfully deliver a project. Whether helping with estimating, learning safety procedures, assisting with invoices, or observing project teams in action, each experience helped her better understand the industry she plans to join.
When asked what advice she would give future interns, her answer was simple.
“Ask questions. Even if they seem small, people are willing to help.”
Following her recent graduation from Pine View High School, Sayde plans to spend the summer working in construction before attending Arizona State University this fall, where she will pursue a degree in Construction Management.
The experience left a positive impression on both Sayde and the Grass Creek team.
“Sayde took every opportunity to learn and wasn’t afraid to ask questions,” said Spencer Richins, CEO of Grass Creek Construction. “She approached each experience with a great attitude and a willingness to learn. We appreciate the effort she put into her internship and are excited to see her pursue a career in Construction Management.”
Grass Creek Construction is proud to support students exploring careers in the construction industry. Investing in the next generation of builders, project managers, and construction professionals helps strengthen not only our workforce, but the communities we serve.
We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Sayde and look forward to seeing what she accomplishes in the years ahead.
